The best LEGO Pirates minifigures of all time – and their new companion

The best LEGO Pirates minifigures of all time – and their new companion

One of the best and most detailed LEGO Pirates minifigures of all time is about to arrive on shelves, so here’s a look back at the esteemed company Series 27’s Pirate Quartermaster is joining…

More than 200 unique LEGO Pirates minifigures have found their way into sets since 1989, and while many of them are identical in all but the smallest of ways (a head print, for example) or cobbled together from the same parts in different configurations, there are a handful that stand out above the rest. That podium of pirates will soon include 71048 Series 27’s Pirate Quartermaster.

If you want to outfit the likes of 31109 Pirate Ship, 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay and 10320 Eldorado Fortress – and the rest of your swashbuckling display – with similarly excellent LEGO Pirates minifigures, these are the ones to aim for.

Pirate Girl (Series 20)

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 20 review 23

The LEGO Collectible Minifigures theme has brought us plenty of pirate-themed pals over the years (and most of them are in this list, as they should be). The most recent addition prior to the Pirate Quartermaster was Series 20’s Pirate Girl, who debuted the dual-moulded tri-corner hat and hair element that’s since been reused in sets like 10320 Eldorado Fortress. There wasn’t much budget left for accessories, but her prints are all top-notch and endlessly reusable.

Pirate Cook

LEGO Pirates Pirate Cook minifigure 1024x672

The last time LEGO Pirates sailed on to store shelves as a fully-fledged theme was in 2015, and minifigure design language had advanced sufficiently enough by that time that while the sets were perhaps a little juniorised, the characters included have definitely aged well. One of the most unique inclusions in that range was 70413 The Brick Bounty’s Pirate Cook, whose perfect torso print adds something a little different to any LEGO Pirates line-up.

Pirate Captain (Series 8)

Series 8 Minifigures Pirate Captain

If the Pirate Captain was included in a LEGO Collectible Minifigures series today, he’d almost certainly nod back to a specific classic Pirates minifigure (in the same way Series 25’s Vampire Knight is basically a redux of Basil the Bat Lord). But this Series 8 minifigure is an entirely original creation, and while he doesn’t do much with the typical pirate form factor, his unique hat, head and torso prints still give him some presence in the buccaneer back catalogue.

Tattooga

LEGO Ideas 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay review 3

If you’re in the market for unique and interesting LEGO Pirates torso prints, it’s hard to top Tattooga. (And what a name!) This guy is part of Captain Redbeard’s crew in 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, and is clearly committed to the cause given he’s covered with tattoos of various pirate paraphernalia, calling back to a minifigure with a single anchor tattoo from the original ‘90s theme. The choice of face print is spot on, too.

Zombie Pirate (Series 14)

Series 14 Minifigures Zombie Pirate

While Series 14’s Zombie Pirate might not slide as easily into your LEGO Pirates collection as the rest of this swashbuckling crew, he deserves a mention in this list for his pitch-perfect approach to the concept of an undead pirate captain. The prints and colours on this one are spot on all the way down, from his jaunty skull and crossbones to the coat that carries on down his regular leg.

Castaway

LEGO Pirates 6241 Loot Island Castaway 1024x576

2009’s LEGO Pirates theme dreamed up another possible future for the ‘90s anchor-tattoo pirate, this time as a castaway washed up on a remote island. The beard and hat elements here are more dated than retro, but this 6241 Loot Island minifigure wins a spot in this list for the tattered trouser print on his legs and his exhausted expression. It’s a good one to litter around a LEGO Pirates display.

Scallywag Pirate (Series 16)

Series 16 Minifigures Scallywag Pirate

While Pirate Girl’s headpiece seemingly cannibalised most of the budget for that Series 20 minifigure, Series 16’s Scallywag Pirate managed to incorporate a unique bald headpiece with bandana, dual-moulded legs and even arm printing (peep yet another anchor tattoo on his right forearm). Even with all that he’s remarkably cheap on the aftermarket now…

Captain Redbeard

21322 alt29 594x1024

Perhaps the most iconic LEGO Pirates character of all time, Captain Redbeard has seen it all. The lore around this minifigure is surprisingly vast – did you know he has a son called Nobeard, who he disowned for being unable to grow a beard? – but it’s his incredibly successful character design that’s ensured he’s stood the test of time. He received a modern upgrade in 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay that channels all the hallmarks of the original minifigure (only now with a little more grey in his beard), but you can’t go wrong with any version of Redbeard.

Pirate Quartermaster (Series 27)

LEGO Minifigures Series 27 Pirate Quartermaster 1024x576

That brings us neatly to the latest addition to the LEGO Pirates fold, and it’s tough to say 71048 Series 27’s Pirate Quartermaster is anything other than the most detailed Pirates minifigure yet. She boasts a new hairpiece, dual-moulded legs, full arm and leg printing and a fabric skirt piece, all of which will doubtless come in handy for creating custom LEGO Pirates characters too. This box is topped off with a brand new LEGO cockatoo, expanding the LEGO aviary with an era-appropriate animal.

The Pirate Quartermaster is likely to be one of Series 27’s most sought-after characters alongside the Wolfpack Beastmaster. You can maximise your chances of finding her in the wild by arming yourself with Brick Search’s new and improved minifigure scanner. 71048 Series 27 officially launches January 1, but is already showing up in some stores around the world. Check out our full review here.
