Be our guest in our detailed review of the brand new LEGO Disney 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle.

Belle and the Beast invite you to balls, dinners, and cosy nights in the library in 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle. Made up of nearly 3,000 pieces, it captures every leaning turret and vaulted ceiling of the iconic castle from the animated 1991 movie, and also comes with a pretty comprehensive cast of characters. It's got all the makings of a great set – but how does 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle actually stack up when built?

A mighty build that manages to feel small

While being an 18+ set – and there's certainly enough complex building techniques to warrant the tag – 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle also manages to feel approachable from the very beginning. You build each room in sections and slide them together seamlessly, meaning that it's quite an easy build to break down into parts and take your time with, maintaining stability throughout the process.

It also presents building challenges paired with straightforward sections, perhaps making a good gateway build for a teenager as their first 18+ set or for an experienced builder who wants the details of a complex model without too many headaches along the way.

With a lot of interactive features (more on that later) packed into 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle, there are some intriguing build techniques to keep you interested along the way, from the splat gears underneath the ballroom so Beauty and the Beast can twirl away to different ways to build each and every turret, so the 3,000-piece set never feels boring.

Beauty by name, beauty by nature

That satisfying build process is made all the more rewarding by just how good 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle looks when completed. There are tonnes of details packed in and clear consideration for balancing play with display. Take the windows as one example: the ballroom, which is left open with a high ceiling and room enough for a delicately-designed chandelier, has transparent windows, so you can see minifigures dancing inside.

The lavender tower next to it gives the impression of having rooms inside using printed stained glass windows, making the interior look bigger when you can only see the facade. It's a small detail but 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle is all about the small details, paying attention to where every brick is placed.

If anything, it's only a shame that you can't see more of it. While the bottom floor pulls out to allow you to arrange the grand staircase as you please, the upper floors don't, meaning you can't quite see everything you've built. Chef Bouche, for example, is placed within the dining room, behind the table where 'Be Our Guest' is performed and is very hard to see without ripping everything off the table – a tricky task thanks to the gear elements that help them spin.

Could every floor have pulled out for greater accessibility? Perhaps, but it's a minor quibble and one that we're only after because the design is so impressive throughout.

Let's dance

As well as those design details, there are plenty of interactive features too, from the splat gears that send the ballroom floor twirling so Beauty and the Beast can dance the night away, to clever mechanisms to hide Belle's spare legs to sit down and Beast's human hair. Armoire the Wardrobe swings open for Belle's alternate legs, while a slide-out element in the roof offers a place to hide whichever princely head you're not using.

It's a small but welcome detail to make sure you don't have any extra pieces floating about that could get lost or look messy on display. There's also clever identification of the two best songs from the movie – the titular 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Be Our Guest' – and ways to recreate both of them. The spinning ballroom achieves the former and the food and plates on the dining table can spin to recreate the latter.

43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle is clearly made by fans of the movie, for fans of the movie, expertly identifying what people most want to see and skating over the elements that don't play as crucial of a role. Belle and the Beast don't have bedrooms, for example, but that's a worthy price to pay for the level of detail attributed to the rooms we do get.

Colourful characters steal the spotlight

Last but certainly not least, we come to the characters included in the set. There's virtually no one missing, aside from some background servant-furniture characters, with five minifigures and five brick-built characters – plus two more that remain in place within the set, Chef Bouche and Armoire. The design of the printed elements for all the servants is incredibly true to life, with no stickers used for their creation.

It's also a delight to see Gaston and LeFou, who could understandably have been left out but whose inclusion means you can play out even more scenes from the movie, including the climactic final scene.

The only slight quibble would be that the Beast is not overly beastly. in the movie, he towers over even the muscled Gaston and, although the tail element adds a little height, he doesn't seem that much taller than even Belle when you look at him in a line-up. It makes for a more cohesive look with the other characters but it would have been fun to have a big-fig Beast to really make the change from beast to prince more dramatic.

That said, the minifigures and brick-built character come together so that you really feel like you've got every familiar face from the movie, making 43263 Beauty and the Beast Castle a must-have for fans of the movie, both old and new.
