A smaller size of LEGO baseplates has unexpectedly returned in two new colours after nearly 53 years since their last appearance.
Recent additions to the official online store include a variety of Christmas clothing, Nike accessories and a series of notebooks. Two of these notebooks specifically stand out for granting you the option to customise the covers with LEGO elements, then take out the LEGO-compatible part before recycling them.

When first looking at the notepads on the official online store, it was assumed that the latter notebook featured a standard 16 by 32 baseplate to be taken out. A helpful diagram inside the cover confirms that this is not the case, and that the actual size of this baseplate is just shy of the usual 16 studs.
The diagram demonstrates that there are 14 indentations across and 14 down, matching the indentations on existing LEGO baseplates, of which there is always one per stud. This means that the notebook's baseplates are likely 14 studs wide and 14 studs deep. There has not been a baseplate at this size since a rounded version in 1972's 355-1 Town Center Set with Roadways. BrickLink has a record of a similar square-corner 14 by 14 baseplate, but it was never included in a set.
Should the diagram be precisely accurate, this is the first time in which the LEGO Group has released a 14 by 14 stud baseplate in nearly 53 years, and it's sure to be useful to fans by expanding the existing array of LEGO baseplates with a quarter element. The diagram may be inaccurate, and this could be a 16-stud wide baseplate. That would still be notable since it would need to be 16 studs deep to fit inside the cover, matching a piece last seen 11 years ago.
